A visit to Yosemite National Park is like going to a celerbration of light and water. With its high granite cliffs and majestic waterfalls, Yosemite is one of the world’s most photographed natural areas. Inspiring views of Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, Bridal Veil Fall, Nevada and Veral fall, and Yosemite Valley have brought smiles to the faces of millions of enchanted visitors. People come from all over the world to behold and bask in the magical beauty of Yosemite.
Straddling both the eastern and western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain chain, the park has an elevation range of between 2,127 and 13,114 feet. Yosemite has a mediterranean climate. Winters are mild and wet, while summers are hot and dry.
But there is a problem with being so popular and accessible. It is the very real danger of being loved to death. This is the sad situation facing Yosemite today. With almost 4 million visitors every year, most spending there time in the 7 square miles known as Yosemite Valley, the parks resources are being stretched to the breaking point. Summers are extremely overcrowded, with long traffic jams and heavy pollution choking Yosemite's arteries. Almost 95% of the parks 761,268 acres may be designated as wilderness. But finding a wilderness experience within 10 miles of any road would be very difficult between Labor Day and Memorial Day.
But in the winter and early spring, when there are far fewer visitors, Yosemite is an incredible place to visit. From January to early May when the mountains are covered in snow, and the waterfalls are peaking, Yosemite seems to come back to life. In my eyes, the beauty of Yosemite Valley right after a snow storm is almost unrivaled. If you seek a reall winter wilderness experience try an overnight cross country ski trek from Badger Pass to Glacier Point. There you will see views that cannot be seen anywhere else in the Sierra's
