From the wind-swept reefs along the Pacific Ocean to the temperate rainforests adorning the coastal mountains, Northern California’s coastal wildlands have a lot to offer seekers of beauty and adventure. There are so many great places to hike, camp, or observe wildlife, that any list i could provide would be woefully inadaquate. But clearly there is something to satisfy almost everyones taste in natural beauty.
Some of the large predators that call coastal California home include black bears, mountain lions, bobcat, and coyote. Herds of Tule Elk roam freely throughout Redwood National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore. Sea Otters and other sea mammals frolic within view of the shoreline. California’s coastal wildlands are also home to groves of ancient redwood trees. Many of these giants grow to be over 300 feet tall and live to be hundreds - or even thousands - of years old.
Each season brings something different to the table along the California coast. Spring brings the newborn birds and mammals; summers, the wildflowers. In the fall we have the great migrations of birds passing through. Winters bring lushness to the forests and colorful mushrooms. During the heavy seasonal rains of winter and early spring, many of Northern California’s placid streams became raging torrents of whitewater - some with beautiful multi-tiered waterfalls.
