Waterbirds are well...birds that live on or near bodies of water. To simplify things, I have lumped together shorebirds, waders and waterfowl.
This very large group of birds generally inhabits open areas of beaches, wetlands, mudflats, lakes, ponds and streams. Because their diets differ, and they don't compete for food, shorebirds, waders, and waterfowl can often be found in the same location.
Shorebirds live, feed, and nest in-shore. With some exceptions, they have small bodies and long thin legs with no webbing on their feet. Examples of common shorebirds are: avocet, gull, curlew, killdeer and godwit.
Most wading birds have long necks, legs and bills.
Examples of waders are: cranes, egrets, herons, rails, spoonbills, and flamingos.
Waterfowl are strong swimmers with medium to large bodies. This goup includes: ducks, geese, swans, teals, loons, and coots.
