Murals are an important feature of the urban wilderness landscape. They are important because they bring art to people who otherwise would never set foot in a museum or art gallery. Murals are also important because many of them give expression to people who have been marginalized. Murals have also become a means of communication for those involved in the struggle for social justice. It is said that San Francisco's Mission District has over 500 murals, one of the highest concentrations of street art in the world. The roots of this explosion of vibrant street art can be traced to the Mexican Revolution — and to such well-known pioneers as Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros, and Jose Orozco. The Mission used to be the home of many street artists. Unfortunately for anyone who loves art, both San Francisco & Oakland — especially the Mission District — have become heavily gentrified. Skyrocketing rents have decimated the art community, while the construction of new high rises and the corporate takeover of the city’s rental housing are major threats to existing murals.
These are some of my favorite murals from San Francisco & Oakland i will be updating this page as often as possible.THE IMAGES IN THIS GALLERY ARE NOT FOR SALE NOT FOR SALE..They are for viewing purposes only. The art work belongs to the individual muralist & not the photographer.
