Everyone loves tropical birds. Their beautiful colors make them a must-see for most birders. But climate change and a loss of habitat have become major threats - especially to birds living in mountainous and coastal forests.
The macaw is a member of the parrot family. They are intelligent social creatures that usually gather in flocks of 10 or more. Macaws are easy to find because of their loud squawks and calls. Toucans have oversized, very colorful beaks that they use to feed on fruit and insects. Both the male and female toucan posess bills that reach over 7.5 inches. The apty named resplendent quetzal is considered one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Unlike the macaw and toucan, which live mostly in lowland rainforests, quetzals live in moutainous tropical forests.
The green parrot photos on this page were taken in "tropical" San Francisco, where a flock of over 200 have lived freely for over a decade.
