Contrary to common belief, mushrooms are not just for eating. In fact some mushrooms are even poisonous. But take a closer look, and you will see that many mushrooms, because of their color and shape, are also quite beautiful.
Over the past several years I have combed the temperate rainforests of Northern California in search of interesting mushrooms to photograph. The mushroom season in this neck of the woods starts in November and ends in March.
Northern California’s mushrooms grow in moist or wet areas where the rainforest canopy blocks out most of the sunlight. Different kinds of mushrooms grow during different months of the rainy season.
The color palette of mushrooms can be quite wide, ranging from white to black, and dull to a bright saturated red, yellow, orange or pink. Different types of mushrooms prefer different kinds of living situations. Some are loners or live in small families, while others are more social and live in large colonies.
